Saving a Document

Topic 3 : Saving a document using SimpleText assumes you've created a document.

Why save? When you work with a document in most Macintosh applications, you are actually working with a temporary copy stored in the Macintosh's ram memory. The ram memory of the Macintosh is not permanent, and if the power should turn off, all of your work that hasn't been saved will vanish. Therefore, you should save your work about every 10 to 15 minutes. That way, if the unthinkable happens, you'll only lose a few minutes of work.

Now, Saving a document places a copy of your work on your disk. Information stored on a disk doesn't disappear when the power is turned off. Note that, you should also save your document to the hard drive to guard against your diskette failing.

In this tutorial, you will first learn how to Save to your diskette and then the hard drive.

Here is how to Save a document to your diskette:

Make sure that the disk window in which your document is stored is active by clicking on it.

Choose Save from the File menu at the top of the screen.

Observe that Save is hightlighted

The following dialog box should appear:

The name "apple images" is the name of this person's diskette (on which she wishes to save).

Important: if your diskette's name (it is probably named "untitled") and a diskette icon do not appear in the thin box at the top of the dialog box (like "apple images" above), then you are not saving to your diskette. To save to your diskette, in the save dialog box, click on "Desktop", then double click the icon of your diskette that appears in the box. After this, your diskette icon should be in the thin box at the top and the files on your diskette (if any) should be displayed in the big box in the middle.

If you fail to properly specify your diskette, you'll probably save to the harddrive and not have your file after you leave the machine.

In the dialog box type in my name as the name of your document. Then click save.

Observe :

Your document "my name" has been saved to your diskette. To verify this do the following:

Double click on your diskette on your desktop. The diskette is called "untitled".

After double clicking Your window should look similar to:

Observe that the document "my name" is on the diskette

You have successfully Saved your document "my name" onto your diskette.
