The Rhode Island Cilioprotist Micrograzer Survey is an effort under the direction of one of Dr Hufnagel
to assemble comprehensive information about cilioprotists living in Rhode Island waters and soils.
This information will be useful to a variety of people and groups, such as local environmental and
water quality organizations, town planners, researchers, teachers and natural product prospectors.
It may also become the basis for ecological studies focused on the role of cilioprotists in various
natural habitats. In particular, Rhode Island has several unique habitats whose ciliate population
biology is in need of study, such as the Great Swamp, a White Cedar swamp habitat.
While it is planned to collect morphological, environmental, trophic and genetic data for each species
encountered, there is presently an emphasis on the use of videomicroscopy to document the behavior
and subcellular structural features of the species documented.
I was involved in developing a three-tier database application for the
Rhode Island Cilioprotist Micrograzer Survey (RICMS) ©.
