DF Internships

The Computer Science Department is teaming with organizations that perform digital forensics to provide internships for students, both during the summer and in the academic year.

Pay. Internships may be paid or unpaid depending on the arrangement with the organization. Many may be unpaid (but cool). Also, we currently have federal funding to URI to pay some interns from those funds when the host organization cannot.

Location. The internship will likely be a mix of on-site work at the host organization and work at the URI Digital Forensics Center .

Qualifications. Intern candidates must complete the URI CSC485 Computer Forensics Course before starting an internship. Typically interns will be chosen by a URI faculty member working with the hosting agency. Interns will likely need to pass a background check conducted by the RI State Police.

Host Organizations. We have the following internships in place:

  • The Rhode Island State Crime Lab
  • The Rhode Island State Police
  • Naval Criminal Investigative Service Computer Crimes Unit, Newport, RI.
  • ForensicSoft, a local company that produces digital forensics tools.
  • Warwick Police Dept
  • North Kingstown Police Dept There are several other agencies and companies with which we expect to place interns in the near future.

Application. Students see Dr. Fay-Wolfe to apply for these internships.

Duration/Credit. Internships will be on a semester basis, with the summer counting as one semester. One semester is required for the Digital Forensics Minor, but students needing two semesters of CSC499 for the Computer Science Bachelor of Science degree may need a second semester of a DF internship or some other internship. Note that the CS Bachelor of Arts degree itself does not require an internship, so the only requirement of a BA student would be the one semester needed for the Digital Forensics Minor.
