Algorithms for Big Data (ABD) Lab

URI Algorithms for Big Data Research Group

Algorithms and data structures for “big data,” with applications to computational biology and astronomy. The group is particularly interested in the manifold hypothesis and computational topology, and how these properties can enable more efficient search and analysis.

Research centered on big data and applied AI, with a focus on smart cities and smart health applications. The lab’s work is sponsored by NSF, TIDC, and USDA, and has earned a number of research awards.

ml4sts Lab

We study how ML works for science, technology, and society: applying data science to understand the world alongside other scientists, evaluating ML systems directly, and building tools that help them intervene. Much of our work focuses on building more fair AI.

Research in Machine Learning, with particular emphasis on graph-structured data. The lab’s work has been applied to problems in computer program optimization and analysis, computer vision, and computational biology.

A group that creates, applies, and improves new techniques for the analysis of data, including algorithmic and statistical techniques, as well as newly merged computational and statistical approaches.

Applying the tools of causal inference and network science to pressing public health and educational challenges, including harm reduction, PrEP uptake, and improving learning in statistics education.

Security, Graphics & Systems

Cryptography

Cryptology, the science of coding and decoding secret messages, divided into cryptography (designing cryptosystems) and cryptanalysis (breaking them). Our research has produced an educational website and a Maple® package for cryptography.

Interactive 3D Graphics Partnership

A special interest group of faculty, staff, and students researching, teaching, and applying 3-dimensional modeling, animation, and interactivity, with courses coordinated between the Art and Computer Science Departments.
